Pre-Teen Workshops

How Mindful Arts Therapy Can Help Preteens

Who Am I?

In this fun and interactive workshop facilitated by arts therapist and author Susan Day, preteens will discover what it means to be their authentic inner self, improve self-confidence and build resilience.

What is healthy self- expression?

Healthy self-expression is the process of understanding and coming to terms with our positive traits and the things we have to offer to ourselves, to others and the wider community.

To live a fulfilling life and reach their full potential, preteens need to learn what makes them unique and how to be the best versions of themselves. This will allow them to make valuable contributions and become engaged with their families, schools and local communities. In truth, self-expression is vital in building healthy relationships with themselves and each other.

For preteens, the journey of self-discovery will be the most important journey they will make in their lives.

Why is this workshop important?

Preteens today are overwhelmed with messages about how they should look, how they should behave and how they should be acting. Messages from social media platforms, such as Tik Tok and Instagram, control every aspect of their behaviour, including what they should eat, do for fun, who they should be friends with, love, hate and what they should believe.

These messages are overwhelming and all-consuming. They set expectations that are unattainable and unrealistic. The affects they have on preteens self confidence and self-worth are devastating.

It can be very difficult for teens to find their own personal value and simply to be themselves. And yet alternatively, self-expression is one of the most highly valued aspects of our culture (Kim and Ko 2007)

What does this workshop involve?

The Who Am I? workshops are designed for Grades 5 and 6 and Year 7.

Each workshop takes preteens through a variety of fun activities and discussions to help them explore who they are and what contributions they can make.

At the core of the Who Am I? Workshops are the values of Gratitude, Empathy and Kindness.

Each student will be provided with a copy of the book Who Am I?
