What to Expect from Arts Therapy

What to Expect from Arts Therapy

To fully understand what Arts Therapy is and what to expect from it, you need to understand one simple idea – art is healing.

Many people reading this may already know that when they get stressed, they doodle or play music. Some even grab the kid’s playdough and squeeze away! When you are doing anything ‘arty’ to relieve stress, help you concentrate or work through a problem, you are doing a kind of arts therapy.

Professional Arts Therapy Sessions

Professionally, Arts Therapy is an expressive form of art that involves activities which have been specially designed to release negative emotions and thoughts. By doing them and discussing the results with your therapist, you will gain a greater understanding into your own thought patterns, feelings and how these affect your behaviour.

This creative approach promotes changes that in turn, creates a more well-balanced and harmonious life.

You may be asked to explain why you are looking for Arts Therapy sessions and what you hope to gain from them. You don’t have to go over too many details, but it is important that your Arts Therapist understands what issues you are facing, and any history involved.

Your Arts Therapist will ask you to complete an activity based on what you have told them. If you are taking online sessions, the materials you use will be ones you have purchased yourself, usually under the guidance of your therapist.

If you are having your sessions in person, your Arts Therapist will direct you to use ones they know will best help you.

Once you have completed your session, your Arts Therapist will ask you a series of questions about the art you’ve created. This will help him or her fully understand where your mind is at and how best to structure future sessions.

You are not obliged to share anything unless you want to. You can still benefit from mindful arts therapy even if you don’t want to share how you are feeling verbally.

Change is never easy

Your Arts Therapist may also take a photograph of your artwork for their records. It is a good idea to re-look at these at the end of your sessions. Then you can reflect on how far you have come.

Once your Arts Therapist has a good idea of what your needs are, they will plan your sessions. When I sit down with my clients, I don’t ask a lot of questions. Instead, I give take them through deep breathing exercises. Then I ask them to complete a simple activity based on what their needs are.
