May – Reflections on the Season
May signifies the deepening of autumn and the approach of winter. The cooling temperatures and changing landscapes create a backdrop of introspection and transformation. This period of transition serves as a powerful metaphor for inner growth and self-actualization, encouraging us to reflect on our journey and make meaningful changes.
May is a time of maturity and reflection. The vibrant autumn colors and falling leaves remind us of the beauty of change and the importance of letting go. This month invites us to assess our progress, acknowledge our achievements, and release what no longer serves us. By engaging in this reflective practice, we gain valuable insights into our personal development and can set new intentions for the future.
The cooler weather of May encourages a focus on self-care and emotional resilience. As the days grow shorter and the nights longer, we are reminded of the importance of nurturing our inner selves. This period of introspection allows us to prioritize our mental and emotional well-being, building the resilience needed to navigate life’s transitions.
May in the Southern Hemisphere symbolizes transformation, reflection, and renewal. It encourages us to embrace change, appreciate our journey, and prepare for the future with a sense of purpose and clarity. By aligning with the rhythms of nature, we can deepen our self-awareness, cultivate our strengths, and move closer to realizing our true potential.

Intentions for May
Setting intentions for May can help you continue the progress you’ve made throughout the year and deepen your self-awareness. Here are a few intentions that might be particularly beneficial for this month:
- Cultivate Gratitude: Make it a habit to regularly express gratitude for the positive aspects of your life. Consider starting a gratitude journal where you write down a few things you’re thankful for each day. This practice helps shift your focus from what is lacking to what is abundant, fostering a positive mindset and enhancing your overall sense of well-being. By regularly acknowledging what you appreciate, you become more aware of the sources of joy and fulfillment in your life, deepening your self-awareness.
- Mindful Movement: Incorporate mindful movement into your daily routine, such as yoga, tai chi, or walking meditation. Engaging in these practices helps you connect with your body, increase your physical awareness, and reduce stress. Mindful movement encourages you to pay attention to the sensations in your body, promoting a deeper understanding of how your physical state influences your emotions and thoughts. This enhanced body awareness can lead to greater self-awareness and a more balanced state of mind.
- Develop Emotional Intelligence: Focus on improving your emotional intelligence by becoming more attuned to your emotions and the emotions of others. Practice recognizing and labeling your feelings, understanding their root causes, and managing them effectively. Additionally, work on empathizing with others and understanding their perspectives. Developing emotional intelligence enhances your ability to navigate social interactions, build meaningful relationships, and respond to challenges with greater resilience and self-awareness.
- Create a Vision Board: Take some time to create a vision board that represents your goals, aspirations, and values. This visual representation can serve as a powerful reminder of what you want to achieve and the person you want to become. By regularly reflecting on your vision board, you can stay focused on your intentions and maintain clarity about your path forward. This practice helps you align your actions with your values and aspirations, fostering a deeper sense of purpose and self-awareness.
Art Therapy Activities for May
- May Self-Portrait: Create a self-portrait that represents how you see yourself at this moment. Use any medium you feel comfortable with, such as pencils, paints, or collage materials. After completing your self-portrait, take time to reflect on the choices you made—colors, expressions, and symbols—and write about what they represent to you. This activity can help you explore your self-perception and gain insights into your inner world.
- An Infinity of Peace: The symbol for infinity is the figure 8 lying on its side. It represents the endless cycle of life and the repetition of the seasons. Draw the infinity symbol repeatedly in your art journal. You can draw it in various colors and sizes. Swap to your non-dominant hand. As you create it over and over again, reflect on the positive things in your life which are repeated and how they positively charge your intentions.
- Removing Self-Doubt: Using colored pencils, draw yourself doing something you are good at. This might be cooking, driving or your chosen occupation. Fill the page with images that reflect your talents and gifts.
- Natural Mandala: As the cooler days begin, go outside and collect pebbles, leaves, twigs, feathers and other natural objects you find lying on the ground. Use these to create a mandala outside. Take a photo of your creation and allow the weather to disperse each object, returning them to nature.
